Upgrade from S300 by importing disks

I have a T410 with an S300 that seems to have died (startup hangs while initializing the S300). I really, really don't want to lose the drive contents and S300 controllers seem to no longer be available. I have a SAS 6i/R that seems to be identical, but it's not (it does see the drives, but not as an array and probably shouldn't since the array is a three drive RAID5 and the SAS 6i/R doesn't support RAID5. Is there a currently available controller that I can use to import the array from the S300?

Please don't say 'just restore from the backup', the backup drive failed last week. :(

Dell PowerEdge 2950 - 73GB drive failure- firmware different on spare drive

Hi

I have a PowerEdge 2950 that has a drive in a mirror config that is flagged up as Imminent failure,

I have a spare drive on site that is the same capacity, but has a different firmware level.

Origrinal drive

H8799  Hard Drive, 73G, Serial AttachedScsi, 3, 15K, 3.5, FJT, AL9LX

73GB 15k rpm SAS 3.5"
Single Port 3Gb/s
Dell P/N: 0H8799
Drive model: MBA3073RC
Drive P/N: CA06779-B20300LD
Drive Firmware: D206

spare drive

73GB 15k rpm SAS 3.5"
Single Port 3Gb/s
Dell P/N: 0UM837
Drive model: ST373455SS
Drive P/N: 9Z3066-051
Drive Firmware: S513

So is the firmware an issue with a Dell server ?

or should the drive just slot in and rebuild as a mirror ?

thanks for any advice.

Seagate SAS Firmware - The operation failed due to an invalid image file

Hi, I'm trying to bring all my servers up to date with drivers and firmware but I've got stuck on one. Its a Seagate SAS firmware update ST9300653SS and ST9146853SS (But as one update).

I found the following thread with the same issue, but can't understand the solution.
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/906/t/19276372

I've stopped the OpenManage service but its still failing. The post mentions unmounting the logical volumes, but as I don't have separate HDD's on another controller I can't unmount to perform the update from within Windows.

Any suggestions welcome. Thank You

Adding Drives to PowerEdge R710 RAID

We have a PowerEdge R710 running a RAID1/RAID5 configuration.

  • PERC 6/i SAS Raid Controller with 2x4 internal connectors.
  • RAID1 is made up of (2) 146GB 15K 2.5" SAS drives.
  • RAID5 is made up of (3) 500GB 7.2K Near-Line 2.5" SAS drives.
  • (3) empty drive slots are available.

The server is running VMware ESXi v5.0.0. We've nearly maxed out storage so I need to add storage. I'm not sure what options I have to do this. These are the options I hope are possible.

  • Add (3) 500GB drives the same as the currently installed drives and expand the RAID5.
  • Add (3) 500GB drives the same as the currently installed drives and create a 2nd RAID5.
  • Add (3) 1 or 2 TB 7.2K Near-Line 2.5" SAS drives and create a 2nd RAID5.

Can the PERC6/i controller support another RAID5?

Poweredge R710 with W1228 Raid Controller Battery Capacity < 24 hours

Hello... We were getting this error on our R710 server so we shut it down this morning and replaced the battery with a new NU209. It came back up and the error was gone for a few hours but now it is back. Is there anything we need to do to clear this error? Or does it take time to charge the new battery? Thanks!

Does the H310 (or any PERC card) continue to monitor drive health even while the drive isn't part of a raid array; as non-raid disks?

Service tag # <removed>

We have an odd issue... I cannot get support due to warrant out of date but the Dell documentation of the disks is wrong and they still won't allow me to speak with anyeone.  The Dell support reps claim that this device has 500GB drives 3.5inch in the secondary RAID 5 3 disk array.  We ordered the "Exact" part number of j317f as well as we were told to order 86ymw and 400-afpz - none of these appear to be right as the disks in the server and the carrier are not even the same size they appear to be 2.5inch drives as well as they are the new type "gold and black colored not all black".  Support will not let us speak with an engineer without a basically $300 charge yet they have the drives documented wrong and we are out of warranty.  Can any of the engineers suggest a solution.

Note:  I have not removed the drive to physically check it as I didn't want to risk removing it until I actually have a disk to replace it.

Thanks.

R320 Substituting PERC S110 for an PERC H710 - no loss of data

I'm thinking of substituting (adding?) a PERC H710 to our R320.  It currently has an S110 (software raid controller?).

To play it safe I'll have a complete bare metal backup.

Is it possible to add a PERC H710 using my original two drives in RAID 1 and not have to go through a complete reinstall or recovery from backup?

It would make life so less nerve wracking ...

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

Chris H.

VRTX Storage Performance.

Hi All,

First post. We received a VRTX Chassis with 2x M630 Blades last week for a new branch office setup with around 120 users.

I'd been mulling over the small footprint powerhouse for sometime and we eventually took the plunge. We wanted redundancy due to the remote nature of the office and lack of onsite technical presence. I'd read a whole lot around the PERC8 redundant controller performance issues when Write-Back was enabled and that the only way to resolve was to remove a controller/expander to enable write-back. Fortunately, Dell released firmware which resolved this issue and allowed write-back on dual PERC fault tolerant setups.

Our VRTX

2x m630's (2x XEON E5-2650 v3 CPU, 128GB RAM in each)

5x 200GB SSDs (RAID5 VD)

20x 1TB SAS 10k (RAID5 VD minus 1 as hotspare)

I've configured the VRTX chassis, storage and network as guided in various whitepapers and forum posts however, after installing windows on the hypervisor hosts (2x m630s) and setting up the CSV/MPIO i'm not convinced on the storage performance we're getting. Did we make a mistake somewhere or do these look right? The write speed doesn't look great to me.

PERC H200 in RAID 1 (T110 II) stopped working No boot device available

The title says it all, I was performing some routine maintenance on my server, running Ubuntu 12 server, was asked to reboot and now I am getting an error "No boot device available."  Nothing was touched in BIOS.

I see the LSI controller load just fine on boot, and when I go into the LSI config utility there's no report of errors.  I tried booting onto a Knoppix live disc to recover data. but the RAID drive wasn't mounted automatically.

older PE 1900 + SAS 5/IR adapter - how to "break" mirror?

hi,

we have an older PE1900 server with a SAS 5/IR raid card. Currently showing as on the hard drives are problematic.  Because the original drive size is no longer available i'm going to have to replace both.

I'm unsure how to break/remove the existing raid 0 setup that will allow me to rebuild to the 1st new drive, then the second one. I cant find this option anywhere in the OpenManage server admin.

am I looking in the wrong place?

S300 Hardware Issue or Punctured Array?

$
0
0

I have two Dell R510 servers that seem to be exhibiting similar behavior.  They each are set up as a Raid 5 with (3) 500GB 7.2K SATA drives using an S300 raid controller.  The servers use EMC Autostart and are set up as a sort of “hot standby” pair.  It seems that whichever one is active (doing all the reading) keeps kicking a hard drive out of the array.  It is the same drive each time and I have tried replacing the drives with new ones and the same thing keeps happening.   I have done a ton of research on this and it seems that maybe my problem is an array puncture but I really need to verify this before I go down that rabbit hole.  The strange thing is, the last time I replaced the drive in the server it was fine for a whole month.  I am not seeing any errors whatsoever in any of the Windows logs, SQL logs, app logs, OMSA logs, etc. until the drive is kicked out.    Each time it’s kicked out there will be a bunch of 2416 “Disk Medium Errors” in OMSA followed by a 2048 “Device Failed”.   I’ve read that the S300 doesn’t have patrol read but instead uses something called Background Array Scan.  If there is a puncture, shouldn’t this be picked up and some kind of error reported before the drive is kicked out?  The controller has the newest firmware and the Windows driver is up to date.   The firmware on the new drives that are getting kicked out is newer than the existing drives.  Is there any way to troubleshoot this further as the logs in OMSA really aren’t that helpful.

Dell Rack Power Edge R720 with D-LINK NAS?

$

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could guide with this dilemma.

The previous IT person did not really explain how he set up the network so I have been trying to figure out most of the things. So right now I have  Dell Rack Power Edge R720 and a NAS d-link that has 3 disks and today i added 2 other new disk 2 tb each.

I Formatted the volumes on the NAS but for some reason it wont appear the dell. So all the disks are managed though the Dlink I would guess which has the operating system windows server 2012 r2

Then i went to the Webgui of the dell rack and saw the virtual drives but the operating system raid1 and the other 2 disk raid 5 would i need to configure the two new disks to raid1 or raid5

Or do I need to press f8 to convert them to virtual disk? Personally I would want the 2 disks of the 2tb just as a normal disk but aslong as they work I would take any help :)

See pictures

Thank you

Need the part number to upgrade PERC raid controller from S110 to H710 in a T320

$

I've got a basic T320 that was running 2012 2012 Essentials doing the usual and a local sql db. I recently installed 2012 R2 and enabled Hyper-V role and made 2 VM's. Now the disk performance is terrible when the VM's are installing updates and the thing just runs slow. Even Windows took a few hours to install in the VM with 4 cores and 8gb RAM.

I need to get a part number for the right RAID controller for this tower server. Also will I need to get any related connectors or other accessories? I wasn't able to dig under the hood during the network assessment.

Also, will the H710 recognize my existing raid virtual disk made on a PERC S110?
