Hello!

Please, tell me, what are these connectors on the PERC H730 board?
For what purposes are they used? What documentation does this information have?

T430 SSD upgrade

I have a T430 that hosts VMs for developer and integration testing. I'd like to add a SATA SSD. I'd like to find out if that's supported (SAS should support SATA as well, right?) and what the part # is for the drive caddy.

Thanks!

I have a number of R710 and R720 servers which I'd like to boot from SD card running VMware ESXI. Can you recommend SD cards which would run ESXi and would function in both server types.

T605 to Windows 10?

Hi,

I would like to repurpose a T605 that has been demoted to a Windows 10 machine to run applications.  However, Office 2016 will not install on SBS2008 and W10 install does not recognize the SAS Raid.  Is there a driver that is compatible with W10?

Thank you,

720R HD activity light stays on after replacement

I replaced hard drive on a PowerEdge R720.   The drive finished rebuilding, but now the activity light is ON when the drive is idle and flashes when in use.  I used a new Seagate hard drive, and the part number matches the Dell drive that came with the server. I tried the putting the hard drive in spare server with the same results.  RAID 6 with PERC H710 controller.

Max sensible size for RAID6 using 10TB drives?

I have a MD1400 with (12) 10TB near-line drives on an H830.  In the past using 3TB or 4TB drives on an H810 I would typically make MD1200 trays one virtual disk, RAID6, with a dedicated spare.  But with 10TB drives that's 9x10TB or app. 90TB.

Is this wise to make such a large RAID6?  I realize the H830+MD1400 is 12Gb SAS and I'm configured for redundant path, but I'm not sure about the rebuild time or the probability for an unrecoverable bit error.

But I have only one tray and if I configure two virtual disks that would be four drives for parity and one for spare.  That leaves only 7 drives for data for the two disks.  Ugh.

Please advise.

VRTX Cluster and CSV confirmation (Shared storage operation)

Hi,

Can someone please confirm something for me regarding a VRTX and shared storage in how it should operate?

I have a VRTX chassis with 2 blades and 7 disks.

Disk config - 2 virtual, one for the quorum and one for VHD's

Networking similar - one for Quorum and one for core.

I've installed Server 2016, setup clustering and HyperV and configured the PERC drivers etc..

On Host 1 i can have a VM up and running on the shared storage no problem. ON host 2 though i can't see the shared storage on the main machine - it shows up in the Disk Management but offline and i'm led to believe that this is because in a clustered environment only 1 machine can 'own' the storage. I've configured the storage to be a Clustered Shared Volume so my expectation is this:

I want to be able to run multiple VM's on each host all utilising the same shared volume so that i can move the VM's resources from host to host without affecting the disk. Is this expectation correct and if so what am i missing to see the shared storage LUN on both hosts to allow this?

Thanks

2 Raid-1 Arrays

Array 1 2x2GB Sata drives

Array 2 2x250GB SSD

One of the drives in array 1 failed. Replaced the dead drive with a new (unformatted blank) and it doesn't rebuild. Tried to assign as hot spare through OMSA but get the error "Storage Management only displays those disks that can be used as a hot spare. Installing new single HDD in R530 Poweredge

$

I am having some issues trying to get a new hard disk installed to be used as a separate hard disk, outside of the current RAID configuration.  I cannot find the setting I need to make this come online.

Current configuration.  I have two 500GB HDDs configured as a RAID-1 boot virtual disk, five 4TB HDDs configured as a RAID-5 virtual disk.  They all work fine.  I installed a new 10TB HDD into the final bay.  It is picked up in the RAID controller just fine.  It is listed as "READY", whereas all the other disks are listed as "ONLINE".  I have gone into the properties of the disk and see no option to make the disk go "ONLINE".  I have options to make the disk a NON-RAID disk, hot swappable, etc.

Since this is not going to be a RAID disk, I am assuming that I should make it a NON-RAID disk.  I did that, but the disk still does not show as online.

When going into Windows Server 2012 Disk Management, it does not seem to see the drive so I cannot configure it for use by Windows.

I'm probably missing a minor step, but any ideas would be appreciated.

PERC H700: Unable to Change Write Policy

When I try to change the Write Policy to "Write Back" it never actually changes.  It shows that it was done successfully not the setting never actually changes.

What would be preventing the policy from changing to "write back"?

I have the following configuration on a Dell T710:

PERC H700 Integrated Version : 12.10.7-0001

Name : Virtual Disk 3
Read Policy : Adaptive Read Ahead
Write Policy : Write Through
Disk Cache Policy : Disabled

The battery for the H700 Controller is healthy.

RAID 1 cloning/rebuild for emergency backup (PE 1950)

$

We have PE 1950 with PERC 5/i with two 73 GB SAS drives in a RAID 1.  Windows Server 2003 (non-R2) with critical application Primavera Contract Manager (old version from 2010). We needed an outside consultant to set up Contract Manager (CM) and create special forms for it.  Need to keep CM running for foreseeable future.  No budget.

I am concerned that some hardware may fail in PE 1950.  I'd like to virtualize server but it needs to be upgraded from Windows Server 2003 (non-R2) to Windows Server 2003 R2 to be compatible with Windows 2012 R2 Server requirements.  I have software license for the 2003 R2 upgrade.  However, I am concerned that if something goes wrong with the CM software because of the R2 upgrade, I may not be able to go back to a working system.

We have two more 73 GB SAS drives, same model as those installed in server.  I am thinking about using the RAID 1 rebuild process to produce a complete cloned set of the existing server drives.  2 questions: (1) Doable?  (2) Best way?

Thinking I'd do this: (1) Shut down server; (2) Pull 2nd drive OUT; (3) Boot up server and go into OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) and hopefully there will be an option to rebuild RAID 1 onto 1 of the unused SAS drives we have; (4) After rebuild, repeats step 1-3 using 2nd unused SAS drive; (5) Shut down server and hopefully boot from the 2 "new" SAS drives - if all goes well, upgrade this setup to 2003 R2.

Advice?  Thank you.

R810 H700 unable to see the HDD to wipe raid partition

$

Hello to all,

I have a r810 server with 6 SAS HDD 450GB.

I have made the install of esxi and I saw that the HDD wasn't showing in the software so I enter to the H700 controller to setup the VDs. I made the first 3 HDD in RAID 5 with the lower cache size and the other 3 HDD in RAID 5 again with 1MB cache size. It started doing the build of the RAID and after 30 min I thought that the server stuck and I made a hard reset.
I know that was a big mistake.
Now if I have the HDDs are connected I can't access the raid controller and bios.
If I remove them all going great.
I manage to go to the raid controller and delete the VD but now all the HDDs are saying FAILED.

I think that I need somehow to wipe the HDDs so I can remove them from the RAID partition and reinitialize them.

Any suggestions?
I try DBAN but it doesn't work with raid HDDs.
The next days I will try a bootable usb with ubuntu and see if I can from there wipe the HDDs.
If you guys have any idea please tell it to me.

Thank you!

Adding Hard Drive to Perc H710

$

We have a Dell T320 tower server with a Perc H710 and 3 - 2Tb SAS hard drives configured in RAID5. The 3 physical hard drives are configure with 2 virtual drives, 0 and 1.  0 is the OS and 1 has all the live data.  All of this is done on Connector 0.  I see that there is a Connector 1.  My question is, can I add 3 identical hard drives to be used as a totally different data drive and set them up as RAID on Connector 1. Is so, how? Basically I want to increase my storage capacity without touching my existing OS (Virtual dirve 1) or Data (virtual Drive 2).   Below are the Open Manage screen shots.

Mounting Screws for Perc H730

I'm in the midst of replacing the PERC H730 card on a PowerEdge 430 and lost one of the  mounting screws, down a floor vent and I can't find it now. I have tried speaking with my Dell rep about it and he has hit a dead end on finding the size of the screw. Dell will not sell these parts is what has been relayed to me, nor will they give me a straight answer as to the sizing of these screws. I refuse to believe that this is a TOP SECRET proprietary part that can't be shared with loyal Dell Customers.
