Replacing an H700 card in a C2100? Receiving error 'incorrect enclosure'

$

I had an H700 card go bad, got another, popped it in the server and upon boot when the RAID card loads it's bios it gives an error that 'Unable to boot. Incorrect enclosure. Does not support full buss master capability'.

Does anyone know if this would be a motherboard problem/incompatability or possibly the drive backplane needs set differently? Possibly a dip header needs changed?

Thanks!

Slow Performance with a S130

Hi, Just taken delivery of a PowerEdge R630 which has a Perc S130 RAID card with 4*250Gb 7200 RPM SATA disks in a RAID5 array and we're experiencing unexpected slow performance.

Using CrystalMark, the max Read speed we're seeing is 12MB/s, with write as 7MB/s. I know it's software raid, but I was expecting a bit more performance than that.

The latest drivers were taken from the dell web site (4.0.0.37) and looking back, the windows server install took a lot longer than usual.

I know it's soft raid, rather than hardware accelerated raid, but I would have expected the performance to be significantly better than it is (I have a NAS here with software raid providing 90MB/s read/write with just an Atom CPU, Not 2*Xeon E5-2620 v3.

Many thanks.

Raid 5 single disk failure, bad boot

I have a T110 / Perc s100/ Raid 5 (3 drives). Ctrl-R shows degraded array, single disk failure/offline.
Server 2003 appears to boot normaly, instead results in blank screen with working mouse arrow in both normal and safe mode.  Is an array rebuild still possible once I replace same part no. HDD? Is the bad boot due to degraded array?

RAID SAS port issue

So we have a PowerEdge R610 with a SAS 6/iR Integrated (Embedded) controller.  Everything in OMSA is green and in our third party monitoring tool (SolarWinds). However we are getting tons of Event Viewer messages that say this:

SAS port report: SAS wide port 0 lost link on PHY 0.: Controller 0 (SAS 6/iR Integrated)

Firmware Version 00.25.47.00.06.22.03.00
Driver Version 1.34.03.00
Storport Driver Version 6.1.7601.17577

That is the versions of driver/firmware. We have 2 physical disks in a RAID 1 set.

Any ideas on this one?

Thanks.

Perc 5/i, all drives in array blinking amber. Server won't boot to OS.

In a PowerEdge 2900, Perc 5/i.  Two arrays, a 4 HDD RAID 5 and a 2 HDD RAID1.  RAID 1 is fine.

RAID 5 array, a single disk was showing amber.  We replaced the drive with a seagate, same model as the rest in the array.  Array rebuilt, things were working fine.  Fast forward approximately 10 days, another drive in the RAID 5 array shows amber.  We ordered another seagate and replaced.  In the process of rebuilding the array, we lost had another go amber.  The config utility reported the array as failed.  Restarted the server, and the controller reported "foreign config".  Imported the config, and the array came back online.  However now all four drives in the array are blinking amber.  Can not boot in to the OS, nor even boot to Windows install CD.

Both LEDs on 2 Seagate 15K 300GB HDDs are always on while on others only one status LED is on

Hi, please help. Building new system on R710 with 8 2.5" hard drives. 2 hard drives there are Seagate 15K 300GD while others are HP brand. All works and RAIDed them with H700 as a RAID 10. Only problem with that 2 HDDs that are Seagate have both green LED's are always on (both green) and others are only status LED is on. Is this a tread and should I worry about that? Thank you in advance!

Can the PERC H730 RAID controller handle two separate RAID arrays on two sets of HDDs?

So, I'm looking to build a server that will have 2x 1.6TB PCIe SSDs, and 4-8 4TB SAS 7200RPM HDDs. I'd like to have the two SSDs mirrored in a RAID1 array (these will house the Linux server OS), and I'd like to set up the 4-8 4TB 7200RPM drives in a RAID5 or RAID6 array. Can this be accomplished with a single PERC H730 RAID controller? Or would I need to somehow install a second RAID controller? I'm pretty unfamiliar with this sort of thing, so any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Problem of compatibility disk part number 400-26811 with Dell PE T310

I've bought a disk with tray caddy that have part number 400-26811:

accessories.euro.dell.com/.../productdetail.aspx;l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsdt1&sku=400-26811

From the Dell site it is compatible with Dell PowerEdge T310.

The product shipped has part number 400-26811 and the tray caddy has DP/N 0GTMD2.

Is correct the tray caddy DP/N 0GTMD2 for server Dell PowerEdge T310 and for the product part number 400-26811?

Thank you for your attention,

Marco

Dell R710 server upgrade to Windows 2012 R2

$

Question for the forum:

I got a Dell R710 server.  It has a PERC 6/i RAID card in it.  There are 5x 2 TB drives on the PERC 6/i configured as RAID-5 right now with 6th disk as a 480 GB SSD.   I currently has WINDOWS 2012 R2 installed.   Windows 2012 sees the 5x 2 TB as a 7.27 TB hard drive and the 480 GB SSD as a second hard drive.

I heard Windows 2012 R2 storage solution is better.  I want to convert the 5x 2 TB to just hard drives so Windows 2012 R2 can manage it.  I have the following questions:

1.  Do I need to go into PERC 6/i controller and delete the RAID 5 and create a virtual disk for each 2 TB drive as a RAID-0 drive so Windows can see each as separate hard drive?

2.  Each of the 2 TB is a SATA II drive.  PERC 6/i can only support up to 2 TB at 3 Gbps.  Is this the best way to do this?  Can I upgrade the drives to SATA III or 6 Gbps?  Will this server support that at all?  I

3.  If I install a SATA III controller into the PCIe slot, how do I hook up SATA III drives to the card.  All the drives are plugged into the server on the front right now.

4.  If a drive fails, will Dell R710 still flash orange light on the front to show which drive failed?  Can people still hot swap the drive?

5.  Will Windows 2012 R2 be able to tell which drive failed?  With 5x 2 TB for storage and 480 GB set up as SSD for tiered storage, what's the best way to set it up for performance?  Simple Volume or mirrored?  How many drive(s) can fail before Windows can't recover from the failure?

Please advise on the best way to convert over to WINDOWS 2012 R2 software raid.  Thanks for the help in advance!

Catch-22: Convert from MBR to GPT but restoring BMR image converts back to MBR

I want to install (2) 4TB HD in a RAID 1 configuration on my Dell R220 with a Perc H310 RAID Controller and Windows Server 2008 R2.  in order to fully use the 4TB I need to convert my file system from MBR to GPT.  So I did the following:

- Using Windows Server Backup I created a Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) image of my existing RAID 1 setup of 500GB and copied this to a removable USB HD.

- Next I removed the old HD's and installed the (2) new 4TB hard drives.

- Using the RAID software I created my virtual disk, in a RAID 1 configuration, as a single volume.

- Booted from a Win Server 2008 R2 disc.  Loaded the drivers for the H310, then using cmd diskpart I was able to convert the disc into GPT.  Then used the recovery tools to reload my BMR image, the system restores and the computer reboots.

Here's the problem.  After the reboot, my old system has been restored but the restore process re-converts the disc back to a MBR.  Arrgghhhhh.

I guess my last ditch plan is to just back-up my files and do a fresh install of everything but that is a nightmare!

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Alright so I've been battling a 4/SC perc for a day or so to find that it is not compatible with 2008 r2.

I need to upgrade it to 4e/DC I believe. Is their any hard ware conflicts I need to be aware of ?

Is their a process to replacing a raid controller that I need to be aware of? Where is the best place to purchase a 4e/DC ?

aswell I understand this system is old and replacing the system would be easier but I was handed the project of getting this upgraded and I do not like to disaapoint.

any information you think I'd useful would be appreciated.

RE: PowerEdge SSD RAID Options

Josh,

I'm not so sure this is the verified answer. I followed the link you provided and from that page linked to a white paper about Dell SSD FAQ. In this white paper it said Dell Drives don't currently support TRIM. So even if the controller did it would be useless. This paper looks to be old. Can you point us to something more current? I have a ton of questions and documentation is really lacking. How much the drives are over provisioned from factory (%) ? What RAID levels support passing the TRIM/UNMAP commands? Does it work with all RAID levels supported by the controller, or it it only RAID-1 and RAID-0? Or is the TRIM only supported in Non-RAID (pass-through)? What OS is this certified for or is it any OS that can send TRIM commands?

http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/Documents/Solid-State-Drive-FAQ-us.pdf

14. What is TRIM/UNMAP and do Dell enterprise SSD drives support it? Certain Operating Systems support the TRIM function, which translates deleted files to the associated LBA (logical block address) on the storage device (SSD). For SATA, the command is also called TRIM, for SAS, the command is called UNMAP. The TRIM/UNMAP command notifies the drive it no longer needs data in certain LBAs (Logical Block Address) which then free up a number of NAND pages. The TRIM/UNMAP command needs to be supported by the OS, the drive, and the controller in order to work. The TRIM/UNMAP command could result in higher SSD performance from both the reduced data needed to be rewritten during garbage collection and the higher free space resulting on the drive. Current shipping Dell enterprise drives have high enough performance and endurance so they do not yet support these commands even if the OS supports them. These features are being investigated for subsequent Dell SSD offerings.

Also, there is no mention of TRIM support from LSI, which the PERC H730, and H730P are based on.

PowerEdge R620 Possible to RAID 1?

$

Hi, my current PowerEdge R620 is configured with only one 100GB SSD to run VMWare.  Then it's connect to an Equalogic SAN.  I want to add redundancy in case HD0 fail.  Is it possible to add another 100GB SSD and configure both drives to RAID 1 without wiping out any current data on the SSD?  Also, rather than adding another SSD, is it possible to add a 128GB SD card to create the RAID 1 with the current SSD?  Thank you in advance for any advise.

Part J515N - 3Gb SAS or 6Gb SAS...that is the question???

$

I am confused on a part's technical specifications and am wondering if there is anyone who can give me a definitive answer. I service out of warranty PowerEdge servers and often have to buy hard drives from various parts vendors. I am finding mixed information about the Dell branded drive J515N. Dell has replaced it with R727K (which is a 6Gb SAS drive) but I have had trusted vendors tell me the J515N drive was and is a 3Gb SAS drive. Can someone give me a definitive answer...better yet, can someone give me a tech spec sheet on the J515N?  -Thanks
