Dell 2950 Perc 5/i integrated firmware update runs but does not update firmware

$

I have an older 2950 server with a PERC5/i integrated RAID controller and RAID firmware v5.2.1-004 and OMSA says this is lower than the required minimum of 5.2.1-0067. The server is running Windows 2003 R2, Standard, Service Pack 2.

I downloaded the 5.2.2-0072 upgrade executable and it appears to run without errors but the FW version is not updated. I tried rebooting the server but the FW still shows the same version.

The driver is version 2.23.00.32.

I also tried the FW update on another server with 5.2.2-0067 FW and the result is the same - the exe runs but the FW is not changed.

I also tried turning off the OMSA services (DSM...) and the re-running the update .exe but still no update.

I ran the diagnostics from F10 on boot up and it gives Error Code 2900:0221 System Firmware... which I guess is just telling me the same thing as OMSA - firmware version lower than minimum.

Any suggestions? Some other way to run the FW upgrade perhaps? (I am running as administrator).

Thanks, Wayne

Server 2012r2 on PowerEdge 320 - Cannot find drive

$

I am attempting to install windows Server 2012r2 to a PowerEdge 320.  The computer has a PERC mini-310 card with two drives configured in a RAID1 array.  When I get to the drive selection window in Windows Setup, it sees Drive 0 Partition 3 as "unused" and size = 1840.9 gb.

When I try to select this as the target, the setup program says "We couldn't create a new partition or find an existing one.  For more information see the setup log files."

I tried formating the partition, which works without error.  Windows still will not install to it.

I looked for a driver to download and found nothing for Windows 2012r2.  There is a driver for 2008r2.

I have several PowerEdge R220 systems with the same PERC controller.  Server 2012r2 installs to them with no problem at all.

What am I missing?  How can I get Windows to install on this server?

Thanks - Bill Gee

BIOS, PERC 6/i, Storport and HDD firmware upgraded to final ver's :: RAID won't see extra space

Hello,

I have a pesky PE 2950 which I just upgraded all its firmware to their latest versions that refuses to allow the OS riding on top (Windows 2008 R2) to see the new 300GB drive expansion size.

I had two 67GB drives on a RAID 1. I removed one via cli at bootup and swapped it with a 300GB. Replication from the exisitng 67GB drive to the new 300GB went w/o a hitch. I then removed the final 67GB drive from the same RAID set and replaced it with the second 300GB drive and replicated w/o issue. The OS booted w/o issue. Despite the fact that PERC 6/i is at its most recent version (as well as the other firmware mentioned in this title), I still only see a 67GB volume in Windows! I scanned the drives and nothing -- just a 67GB volume. What am I missing here? I thought for sure I would see the spare 211.12GB Available RAID Disk Space, but I don't. OMSA clearly shows the virtual disks in RAID one as "Capacity 278.88GB". Both drives are identical. In Physical Disks I see Capacity 278.88GB, Used RAID Disk Space 67.75GB, but, again, Windows 2008 R2 does not see the extra space. I even downloaded Acronis' tool-set to double check. It, too, only sees 67GB. Confused.

2.5" trays interchangeable between R series and T series?

Have an R series sever with a bunch of 2.5" NL SAS drives that a friend of a customer wants to get rid of - closing up shop or something. I have a T630 with the 16x 2.5" chassis and PERC H720 1GB used in a lab that I want to put a bunch of storage in.

Before I make an offer, will those drives just slide right in with the same trays?

Thanks!

how to re-enable raid? t320 & PERC H710 & windows 2008

How can I re-enable lost logical volume? I can see it from raid bios still configured as usual but windows(SRV2008R2) see it as unpartitioned space.

I had two logical volumes but second was erased by me and right after reboot windows stopped to see first logical partition.

Dell PowerEdge R320 - PERC S110

I have a client running Dell PE R320 with 3 physical drive and 1 virtual(logical) C: Drive.  The server is currently running Windows SBS 2011.  The server doesn't contain any of the Dell tools for the PERC S110.  Due to how the server is configured it's not performing well, high disk queue averages and such.  Without rebooting I can only make the assumption that the RAID is setup with 0 or 5 based on how many physical disks are in the system.  My question is, if I add a fourth disk, can I use it to create a second virtual(logical) disk drive using one drive from the original array as well.  And can I do this without losing data.  My intent is to have two independant RAID 1 data sets for logical C: & D:.  I 'd prefer to not have to do a restore of the data if possible.  Can I pull 1 disk out of the RAID0 or RAID5 and repurpose it for a new RAID1 data set without destroying the whole array.

PE R510 w PERC H710 does not see physical disks to replace in Raid 1-0

Hi all, I am running RAID 1-0 on my server here and we had a disk fail.  We replaced the disk but after clearing it and letting it spin up from scratch the disk will still not be seen in the Virtual Disk Page.  This is the second drive we have purchased thinking that it may be a compatibility issue with the previous one.  Can anyone shed some light on why this may be the case or some steps that I may have forgotten.

TIA

Import existing boot disk into PERC 6/i

I don't want to lose the configuration and data from this boot disk, but I do need to place it on the PERC 6/i controller that's in the new box. Is there any way to import the drive, or am I looking at a bare metal backup, create a VD, then bare metal restore to the VD?

STOR018: No foreign drives detected

I have a R630 with PERC H730 Mini (Embedded) and 8 physical disks.

Configured 7 disks in RAID5, and 1 disk as Hotspare.

During a failover test, the Hotspare and one disk in the RAID was removed

The disks was plased back in the server and the RAID rebuild completed without errors, all OK.

But I cannot see the Hotspare.

Error in iDRAC8, Storage -> Controllers -> Setup -> Foreign Configuration:

STOR018: No foreign drives detected.  If the only foreign drives present are in a secured state, run a secure erase operation on the drives and retry the operation. Otherwise the operation was not successful because there are no foreign drives.

I can see the Disk in iDRAC8, Storage -> Physical Disks -> Properties -> Health and Properties, listed as “Foreign”

How do I  “run a secure erase operation”?

And will the secure erase operation only erase the Foreign disk?

Thanks

4 drive Raid 1+0, 2 drives offline - what next?

We have a 2850 with a failed raid volume that we're trying to recover. The system is running FreeBSD and sometime last night, rebooted.

Looking at it, we have 2 drives (out of 4) in our raid volume that have been marked offline. We're unsure if we should force one or both of the drives online and try to recover the data onto another machine, or if we should leave the system offline and contact a data recovery service.

Here are some screenshots from the RAID bios:

Looking for some advice on troubleshooting this!

Adding 3 drives to PERC H700 in PowerEdge R710

Greetings all,

I need to expand the storage on a server running non-critical VMs.

I currently have 3 x 600GB drives and one VD in raid 5.
We will be adding 3 more identical drives, staying in raid 5 to increase storage.

I've read a couple of posts regarding similar upgrades where the user was instructed to use OMSA in order to add the drives and preserve data. This server isn't running Windows, it's running VMESXi 5.5.0.  I will be adding the drives directly through the PERC controller.... Is my data in danger doing this? Should I count on adding time for re-installing VMESXi and restoring my VMs?

Thanks in advance!

Replacing H710P RAID Controller

$

Hi,

I have a H710p controller in a 10 disk PowerEdge R720 server. The current controller suffers from an intermittent battery failure (happens about 1-2 times a year, the logs display a PERC battery failure and then the controller resolves to the normal state after 1 minute.

I'm told that the controller and battery must both be replaced. I have instructions from Dell on how to replace the physical controller, but what I'm not sure about is the exact steps to ensure that my RAID and disk setup remains intact after the upgrade process. Please can someone advise? I just need to make sure all the virtual disks and drive configurations remain in place after the upgrade.

Thanks

Rebuild Array

I have an old PowerEdge 2900 server with PERC 5/i Integrated controller. I have 4 SAS HDs (136GB each) configured as RAID10. The total virtual disk size is 272GB.

On this HD, I've been running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange Server 2007. My Exchange server information store is gobbling up the HD very quick. There's 45GB remaining space on the partition. If I don't do something quick, I will run out of free space soon.

I plan to add 2 new SAS HDs and rebuild the array as RAID10 with 6 SAS disks (total size should be 408GB). After rebuilding the array, I will have a new empty disk of 408GB in size.

My final goal is to have a fully functioning Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange Server 2007 running without a reinstall but a simple recover from backup. I do have nightly FULL Windows Server 2008 backup (bare metal recovery option is enabled).

Will this plan work?

PowerEdge 2900 does not boot

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 Server and converted the EISA to NTFS.  I went ahead and did it remotely and rebooted the server. Now I cannot get reconnected to the server. However, after physically being in front of the server there is a window with three options: 1) Run Diagnostic test   2)MpMemory Test  3) Reboot.  I ran the diagnostic test and also rebooted which only prompts me back to the same window.  There is no hardware issues. Windows itself does not boot up. I am stuck at the screen with the 3 options i mentioned. Any suggestions on how to boot up Windows will be much appreciated!

R410 - Trying to upgrade H200 to H700

Hi All,

We have a few of these R410 servers, all of which have H700 controllers, but one has a H200 and suffers with disk speed issues, so we want to upgrade to the H700.

The server has 4 SATA disks in it. Two are configured as Raid 1 with the OS on it.

The other two disks do not have hardware RAID enabled.

We have bought a H700, and tried to upgrade.
We installed the card, imported the foreign configuration, which all worked fine.
The issue is that Windows will not boot, and keeps giving BSOD.

A guess would be that the drivers for the H700 are not installed.
We can't have the two controllers in the server at the same time as there is only one PERC slot.

I also just saw one random post online which says you can't upgrade to a H700 if the disk is a boot drive, but that doesn't make much sense. Surely once the system and OS sees a disk it doesn't matter if it's bootable?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
