Are my drives dead?

I've recently bought a refurb Poweredge R710. It has a Perc 6/i controller and it came with 4 x SAS HDDs. They are Hitachi HUS156060VLS600 (which as far as I'm aware, are Dell certified drives?).

Now the BIOS, Diagnostics, and Nautilus firmware updater all recognise the drives fine (and according to Nautilus, they all had the latest firmware on), and so does the Perc 6/I controller. They all show as 'Ready' until I add them to a RAID configuration. Then, they all show 'Failed'. I can't initialise them then as soon as I restart the configuration throws up errors.

Is there anything I can do?

EDIT: By the time this post got approved, problem is solved. Drives had NetApp firmware on them which is incompatible with Perc. Drives swapped with supplier, no problems.

HBA330 Dell R730xd

Hello Guys

In a server R730xd we have fully populated the 12 x 3.5" front bays, the 4 x 3.5" internal bays and the rear 2.5" bays Our vision was to use the 2 rear drives (2 x 300GB 10K SAS) for the OS, however ideally I would have liked to make this a hardware RAID 1, so a drive failure doesn't require an OS re-install

The server will install Windows S2D.

Is possible create a Raid with this controller?

NVMe on Dell R730xd

Hello,  We have just received a new R730xd.

We intend to install several NVMe disks on a specialized controller.  The technical sales fellow that we dealt with said that NVMe is only available on 2 of the 8x PCIe slots but cannot find any documentation on this.

Can anyone here tell me which slots we need to use for NVMe PCIe cards?

Thanks

Upgrade PERC H810 firmware?

Hello,

I have been all over Dell's support site and I am unable to figure out how to get a newer version of firmware for my PERC H810 card. I have version 21.3.2-0005 in it now. That's dated Sep. 2015, IIRC.

Hopefully there is a newer version that will allow me to use my 4TB Seagate drives in it. Right now they're unrecognized, and marked as "BLOCK" in the raid configurator from the BIOS. My reading tells me that I need to "upgrade my firmware". But I can't find anything newer.

Like I say, I have poked around for an hour trying to find newer firmware... putting in various product names and IDs (Dell doesn't recognize "PERC H810" or my device's serial number). I have tried to get there by putting in an Poweredge R630 product ID, and an R620. No joy. Is there a direct link?

Thanks for the help.

PowerEdge T130 Onboard RAID Controller or Get a Card?

We finally got a budget to replace our entire PoS system and got a PowerEdge T130 to replace our T110. What I'm unclear on is the onboard RAID controller - is it software only or hardware or some hybrid; and what levels of RAID does it support? The existing setup is with the SATA controllers set to AHCI and RAID1 within Windows Server 2008 R2.

Our SSD array from our existing server is still in excellent condition so I want to migrate this over when I'm done configuring the OS and PoS software. Should I go into the BIOS, change the controller to RAID and see what levels it will give me or would I do better to use the physical card from the T110 in the T130? The T110 currently uses a PERC S300 card with 4 SSD's in RAID10. OR, can someone point me toward a better RAID card for this server that would do well for RAID10? I have some time before this system goes into the production environment so I would like to make my hardware changes now while I still can.

This is only the second full-out server build I have used in the past 6 years. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts on the T130, RAID, etc. Finally, moving into the 64 bit world, thank goodness.

Where are the power for internal HDD bays on a R730xd?

Hello,

We would like to use the two internal HDD drive bays.

Is there a spare interface on the iPad R730xd that we can use for this drive?

How would we power these drives?  Do we need to buy special cable the connects to the PSU somewhere on the system?  If so, where would we buy this?

Thanks

Chris

Dear Friend,

Below specification for my filer server,

Win 2012 server, 16MB, 300GB*3 (windows 2012 R2 server) +2TB*2 (company data) + 4TB*3 (back up drive)

On back up drive, when I checked the complete data with hidden files, (already removed all temp files & etc data)  complete data is only 2.78 TB, but when u click My Computer icon, I will see backup drive is 445 GB free of 7.7TB.

Kindly solve this problem for my file server.

I will be waiting for your response.

Best Regards,

"Simple" Rack mount server

I need to stand up a new bare metal box for Ubuntu 16.04LTS using the ZFS file system.

One issue with ZFS is that it needs to talk to the raw disk drives directly. PERC controllers do not allow this even when  you expose each drive as a single drive.

I need to know if there is a new Dell rackmount server that has 4-6 plain old SATA ports without going through a PERC controller.

Yes, I could add a separate SATA controller but I'd rather use what Dell has.

Any suggestions?

Poweredge T310 / PERC S300: Rebuild Failed - options?

$

Hi,

I hope that you can help me. We had an IT company looking after one of our branch offices, and I neglected their logs. They failed to spot a failed HDD (Disk0), which has since been replaced. Unfortunately at the rebuild, another disk (2) went into Degraded state, and has now not rebuilt. The server is still running, and the data appears accessible. A few backups failed but seemed to sort-of-complete after a chkdsk /r run on one of the partitions. If I can, I'd still prefer to rebuild the Raid5.
I have now obtained an additional drive to replace Disk2, which had gone in as a hotspare for the time being.

The rebuild usually gets stuck at 48%. This is logged:

There is an unrecoverable medium error detected on virtual disk:  Virtual Disk 1 (PERC S300) Controller 0 (PERC S300)

Disk medium error detected:  Physical Disk 0:0:2 Controller 0, Connector 0

FW/Drivers are:

Firmware Version2.0.0-0166+00193000
Driver Version2.0.0-0162
Storport Driver Version6.1.7601.22589

I now have 4 SAS HDDs, where 0 shows Ready, 1 and 3 Online, and 2 Degraded with Failure Predicted Yes.

Is there anything I can do to help the system rebuild? In the meantime, I'll obviously try to verify the backup in another machine, but if I could rebuild that'd be awesome.

Thank you so much for any suggestion that points me into the right direction.

Reconfiguring RAID

Hi,

We have an R730 with a PERC H730 mini Raid Controller.

We have 2 virtual disks setup. The first is RAID-1 using 2 physical disks.

The second is RAID-10 using 14 disks.

In OMSA under tasks I can select reconfigure for the first drive.

I can't for the second drive.

Why is that?

Persistent "Failure predicted" error after drive replacement

We have a PowerEdge T320 with a 3-disk RAID 5 array attached to a PERC H310 adapter. The amber light on one of the disks started flashing and OpenMange said that there was a "non-critical" error with "Failure predicted" showing Yes.

I took the disk offline, swapped it out , and let the array rebuild, and the error persists. So I did it again, with another new disk, with the same result.

Ideas? Something obvious I'm missing?

moving data files to new T330

just got a new T330 Windows server 2016 essentials with the perc H730 raid, will be using raid 10 with 4 1.8TB SAS for the data drive.

old server is a poweredge 2900 windows 2003 with perc 5/i raid, data drives are 2tb sata raid 1.

I would like to copy the entire drive to the new server.  can I pull the old drive and install it in the new server and do a robo copy?  not sure if the perc 7 will read a perc 5 disk.

H330 to H730 Upgrade

I ordered a refurb R530.  It was supposed to have an H730, but much to my disappointment it came with an H330 in it.  But I have an urgent deadline for a migration and I have to get started with what I have.  My question is that once I get the H730, can I just install it and hook up the drives and the RAID array will be fine?  Or do I have to restart from scratch and rebuild everything?

T130 Motherboard - Need to identify a spare PCIe Slot

$

We just finished migrating a lot of hardware from our T110 into our T130 but realized that the slightly smaller case leaves us one slot short for a 5th hard drive. However, I did notice that even after populating all the PCIe slots, I see a PCIe 1x slot on the front of the motherboard facing the chassis. I don't see anything describing this slot in the owner's manual. Can anyone confirm if that additional 1x looking slot is usable for any hardware or if that slot is reserved for something very specific pertaining to server management or something?

Alternatively, would anyone recommend me getting an mSATA to USB 3.0 adapter plug and just using the onboard USB 3.0 port for our 5th hard drive? Or would performance be better served using the SATA connector?

Degraded Virtual Drive in RAID Array

I have a Dell PowerEdge T320.  Running Windows 2008 R2 x64.  It has the PERC H310 Adapter with two 500GB drives in a RAID-1 configuration.

When I use the OpenManage Server Administrator, it says one of my virtual disks is degraded.  I think this is the cause of my server going nuts for the past month.  What does the degraded mean?  Should I replace the drive?  I believe this system will let me do hot-swaps too.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Expanding RAID5 on PowerEdge R720

$

Hi all, I've have a Poweredge R720 server configured with 2 Virtual Disks, one for the OS (RAID1) and one for data (RAID5 with 3 disk of 1TB each). I'm planning on expanding the raid5 with another disk.

The disk has already been added and is currently recognized by the OMSA as Ready. From what I've understood now I need only to use the "reconfigure" task on the VD of the data.

I've only few doubts:
1- Is this "reconfigure" task going to erase all data?
2- Can be performend online or I need to take down the system? Is the reboot required?

Thanks for your help

Dell H310 Perc Raid controller not seing Physical Drives

$

Hi, I have a Dell Precision T7400 that I am trying to install and configure the H310 PERC Raid controller.  The controller is not seing any of the physical drives.  I have (1)120 SSD, and 2 WD red 6 TB drives attached.  I have verified that all drives are functional.  I have tried 2 different cables.  We have updated the firmware on the motherboard and the PERC card.  You can access the configuration software where it does not see any physical drives.  Any ideas as to why the card does not see the drives?

Thanks

John

System Errors for the PERC H700 RAID card on R510 Server

$

Hi I've gotten several errors in the system event log. These both come up several times together:

Mon Dec 12 2016 10:18:13A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 3 function 0.
Mon Dec 12 2016 10:18:13A bus fatal error was detected on a component at slot 4.

I have used the OMSA software to find out that PCI slot 4 is the PERC H700 RAID card. I can reboot and log into the raid management software. The OS boots and locks up occasionally.  The system alert light on the front of the server blinks sometimes. I can still access the drive. I have a Poweredge R510 rack server with 12 drive bays. My question is do I need a new PERC H700 controller card? new 512MB ram module for the card? I have tried reseating the card in the riser card and the alert light still comes on. What else can I do?
