Hey guys! We have a PowerEdge t410 server that has a Raid 6 configuration. Now i dont have much experience with RAID. I was recently given the task to expand our server storage. So i went to Best Buy and bough a 1Tb SATA drive to install in our servers like i have done many times before with other machines. When i opened up the server to my surprise there were 6 hard drive bays and they all had a Hard Drive in them. I took a look and they were all in increments of 250GB. I assume that 3 are mirroring 3 in a RAID 6 configuration beause when i hit Ctrl R and went into the RAID configuration utility it says RAID 6 in there. Now it scared the beegezus out of me because when rebooted the machine it kept giving errors and when i checked in the bios it said something about a drive being degraded!! It ended up fixing it self after i verified that all connections were in place about an hour later. My question is how do i go about adding more storage space in this type of configuration. Im scared of wiping or losing data if i dont have much experience configuring RAID. Thank you for your response and help.
I have a R720xd with an embedded PERC H710 Mini and am having trouble with the omreport command (part of the OpenManage Server Administrator 8.1). When I ask omreport for controller information, it tells me that no controllers are found:
[root@ofs001 srvadmin]# omreport storage controller
No controllers found
Do I have a configuration issue? Do embedded PERC's have a controller id? Is there a bug with OMSA 8.1?
I am running on a CentOS 7.1 installation with Linux 3.10.0-229.1.2.el7.x86_64 and 12th gen PowerEdge R720xd.
Any advice would be happily accepted!

I have a PowerEdge T710 with a PERC 6 controller running a RAID 1 configuration. The hard drive 0 is flashing amber so I am going to replace the drive with one that I purchased from Dell. How do I install the new hard drive so the RAID 1 will rebuild itself?
the server sent the following message.
Severity: Informational, Category: Storage, MessageID: CTL1, Message: Controller event log: Controller event log: Integrated RAID Controller 1 New Battery Detected
we didnt alter any hardware, does it suggest damaged battery?
thanks.
Hello ,
Does DELL R430 (with H730 HW-RAID) Openmanage currently supports Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSDs ? Is it certified SSD?
I have found that there exists some issues with 840 EVO series in this thread http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/906/t/19504074
So I'm wonder what about 850 EVO Series..
Also I would like to build the RAID-10 array with 4x 850 EVO 1TB SSDs - will it work properly w/o performance degradation ?
Thanks in advance.
Hi there,
I am using Dell R210 server. I got Sas6ir Raid controller on it.
I'm trying to configure RAID.
Everything is fine at the beginning. It shows both disks on the page.
I'm adding both disks to RAID (changing to Yes) then, C and F3.
AND, problem starts. It says,
"An error occured while writing non-volatile settings.
After that, it removes disk from raid page and not showing hdd 0
After reboot, it shows disk again but cannot raid and turns back to same error.
I plug-out and re-plug raid controller, changed disks but not working.
Is there any solution for it?
8 Drives installed now, would like to fully populate (16 total) I'm unsure if the backplane is fully powered and if the 495W P/S in it now is sufficient to power them all.
Thank You in Advance

Hello.
PowerEdge R720 here
* all latest firmware updated and I MEAN ALL.
* all CERTIFIED DELL BRANDED drives
Twin Quad Core E5-2609 56GB RAM
6 x Dell branded 300GB SAS 15k: capable 6gbps, negotiated 6gbps
Seagate ST3300657SS revision ES66
2 x Dell branded Intel SSD DS S3500 480GB: capable 6gbps, negotiated 3gbps:
INTEL SSDSC2BB480G4T revision D201DL13
My problem is that the SSD are NOT negotiating at 6gbps.
I have updated the drives to the latest 6gbps firmware.
I have checked that force 3gbps transfer for SATA is not selected.
I removed the power and press the off button for 10 sec,
I swapped the drives trays, what else?
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hi,
I have a server PE2650 and original setup of RAID 1 with 5 hard drive, due to some reason two of five hard drive crashed and failed, whole system down. I reboot the server and go into BIOS, from the screen it show two hard drive 0,3 is missing and only detect 1,2,4. And I think 0,3 should be faulty. I quickly takes other two hard drives from another server and replace it with the two which I suspected faulty.
After I replaced and reboot again into BIOS, the BIOS is still only detect 1,2,4. Why no detecting the new drives in slot 0,3? This new drive is configured on other server, why the BIOS not able to detect the new hard drives I bed from other servers? Is it this bring over hard drives still contains the foreign configuration?
What should I do to let BIOS detect this bring over hard drives? Format it? Please help I need to detect the hard drives and I need to reinstall the crashed server, please help.
hello Sir,
I have new problem with dell poweredge r610 PERC6/i and that is :
on my server i have two SAS 300GB HDD, on which m using esxi5.1, sometimes server dosent recognize os, and while checking raid status found one disk went to foreign disk and raid shows fail, and when i create raid again and restart the server, i found server starts with the same os which i was installed earlier 5.1 and no data loss, I want to know why raid fails ?
i dnt have any technical answer, i faced twice this situation and solved by creating raid again...
Hey ..Can anybody please help me out..
I have new poweredge 420 server with two hard disk.Want to recover Acronis image of my old sever on this new poweredge.but While i boot the system from Acronis its not dtecting HDD of server only showing source portable HDD which is containing my backup image.
I have already tried to configure RAID 1 settings in BIOS but still issue is same.
Hello,
I have a PowerEdge 1950 with 4x73GB HDDs in a Raid 5 configuration. I am running out of space and need to increase storage capacity. If it was possible, I would like to replace 2 of those drives with bigger drives. On the Server Product Details page it says that I could use 146 GB drives. Can I have mismatched capacity drives - 2x73 and 2x146? If yes, can I do it in phases - take one offline, swap, wait for the rebuild, repeat? And if I can do all this, I would ideally need to create a new partition, as now it is all one big C drive.
Is this all possible? If not, what are my options?
Thanks!
We have a RAID 5 with 7 300 GB disks. One of the disks has failed and another has a predicted failure.
I pulled a bonehead move and accidentally removed the predicted failure one, which made the RAID 5 go away. Luckily, I was able to put it back in, force it online and the array came back. Whew!
Now I'm nervous, though. Is there any safer way to deal with this situation other than just pulling the failed drive, let it rebuild, and then after it's finished, replace the predicted fail drive?
Should I be nervous about replacing a failed drive when I have another drive in the array with a predicted failure flag?
Thanks!
Hello, i want to buy a R410 with a perc 6/i controler and i want to make 2 Virtual Disk, one will be a 146 Gb RAID 1 (2 x 146Gb Hdd SAS) and the second i want to be a 2Tb RAID 1 (2x2Tb Sata HDD), is that possible on the perc 6/i controller?
Hello,
where can i buy a replacement HDD for PowerEdge 2950. I need 500GB SAS HDD 7.2K RPM 3,5"
I need fast info for our client. Thanks for help and best regards.
Hi there,
Ordered a couple of 1.2TB Enterprise Performance disks (Dell p/n 0RMCP3) to replace the nearline SAS constellation disks in an R320.
However, I have a performance issue with these new disks.
The Constellation ES.3 nearline SAS disks (ST1000NM0023) performed as expected. Sequential write using dd averages around 170 to 180MB/s in a JBOD configuration.
The new disks (ST1200MM0007) only do 20MB/s. No more. I've also tried to create a RAID on the H310 using 4 of these disks (RAID 5 3+1). Performance on the logical volume is about 60MB/s. So it seems the write speed on these disks is limited to 20MB/s. Any thoughts?
I could please do with a quick bit of advise. I have a T420 with 8 bays loaded with 4 x 3TB hdd in a raid 5\ HW driven via PERC H310 (Not much data on here) and 4 x 2TB HDD filled with data. The 2TB drives until now have been using windows storage pools via windows essentials, there is no VM on this server.
There is no back up of the data on any external storage. I know before you say anything more. [:)]
When I've change the PERC for H310 to H710 the 3TB raid 5 shows but I can not see the 2TB storage pool in the PERC bios or in the dell lifecycle and windows is fallijg to boot. I can only guess that the H710 dose not support JBOD there for windows can no see it ever stopping it for booting.
So to solved this I was thinking that I could maybe install the H710 on bus 6 of the motherboard (where its meant to be) and run half of the black plate with the 3TB drives in and then plug the H310 into a second PCI-e and run the other half on the black plate just so I can transfer the data across while in windows.
Do you think this would work just for a data tranfer? also would you configure you storage diffidently?
I an still working on a budget to get more 3TB.
I could set up a second storage of some sorts if i really need to but this would take a very long time to transfer the data across twice so would like to add void this if possible.
I'm only a home user with very little experience of dell servers, big learning curve for me.
Thanks for your time on this in advanced.
My current server has been running Windows SBS 2003 since 2007. Very small office (4 users), shared Server drive, Exchange and BB BES. Has worked well. Configuration (Home Grown System), was Server OS on Raid 1 on it's own controller and Data/Email on an Adaptec Raid 6 array.
I always like having seperate OS and Data Arrays on Separate Controllers.
I have to upgrade and need new hardware. Considering T320 with an 8 drive enclosure. I Also want to use the Perc710 controller for my Data Drive, Raid 6.
BUT...
I've been told that I can't have 2 array controllers. I'm not that familiar with Dell hardware. Isn't their an onboard array controller in the T320? I was hoping to use that as the OS RAID 1 and then use the Perc710 for my data array.
Set me straight on my thinking here. Thanks,
Roveer
