Newbie question on H710 types

Hello

On a 12th gen R320, is there any reason to prefer the H710 mini mono over the H710 adapter?

Do both types require a different cable set to connect to a 8x 2,5" hot plug backplane?

For the adapter type, should it be full height or half height?

thanks

Chris

Dell PERC 710 Mini and Raid Configuration Through LCC

Hello,

I have been trying to deploy an OS to a dell poweredge 730 using the dell lifecycle controller. It seems that only a single vdisk can be created through the lifecycle controller to deploy the operating system on. How can I create a second array for my data storage? Do i have to go through the BIOS configuration utility for the PERC afterwards? ie. <ctrl> <R>? Or does a later version of the lfiecycle controller support multiple vdisks? Currently I am using LCC 2 which is preinstalled on the server. Thank you.

R410 and SSD

We have an R410 with a PERCS300 3GBs SAS/SATA Internal Software RAID Adapter; RAID 5 for PERC S300 Controller.  Currently running 4 146GB 15K RPM Serial-Attached SCSI 3Gbps 3.5 Hotplug Hard Drives.  We would like to increase performance. It has been suggested that we replace the harddrives with SSDs.  First, is that possible?  Second, will there be a performance increase as a result of doing this?

Freeze trying to access PERC on r710

I have a series of r710 servers with 6 disks that I'm converting from raid 5 to raid 10.  They're all running fine, and a couple have already been processed.  But the one I'm up to at the moment, when I get to trying to access the raid configuration, the sequence just stops.

I'm using the iDRAC6 console (the systems are in remote data centres) and booting the systems.  Press Ctrl-R at the appropriate time, and the following text comes up (typos are mine, transcribing from screen cap);

Press <Ctrl><R> to Run Configuration Utility

HA -0 (Bus 3 Dev 0) PERC 6/i Integrated

FW package: 6.2.0-0013

1 Virtual Drive(s) found on the host adapter.

1 Virtual Drives(s) handled by BIOS

Initializing HA - 0 (Bus 3 Dev 0). Please Wait...

And a lot of waiting ensues, with no end point.  I've updated and reupdated the DRAC firmware (in case it's distantly related).

The other servers have all worked fine, and (it's worth noting) that this server is working fine, with functional RAID-5.  There's just no way to get in and edit the RAID config.

HDD positioning on a PowerEdge R720

I have a R720 with 16 x 2.5" drive bays, spanning two backplanes. I plan to create a RAID 10 array with 6 drives. Should I be distributing the drives between the two backplanes, or just starting at 1 and working my way up sequentially?

RAID1 Rebuild PERC S110

New hard drive added. Assigned it as hot swappable. Not sure what to do next. I thought if I just rebooted it would rebuild. Caveat - new drive is larger than the other physical drive.

Adding drive to extend RAID5 on Poweredge R420 with PERC H310

Hello,
I've posted before but just want to make sure I am doing the right thing before proceeding. I have a backup of the server. Have a Raid5, want to add an additional hotswap 1.2TB SAS.
I just want to confirm I will put the drive in hot, on the live server.
I go through Dell OpenManage, I want to extend on of the virtual disks,
I go to the Storage dashboard for ther PERC H310 Mini - "Reset Configuration ... "
And from here I can extend?

Understanding our server system

Dear all,

I'm sorry for the rather long question this is. I wonder if someone can help me understand how our system of hard drives and servers are setup. Our main server is a Poweredge 2950 with five physical hard drives. Three in a Raid 5 setup and the two others on Raid 1. The virtual Raid 1 drive size is 1.86 Tb. That matches what Open Manage Server Administrator says that the physical disks are two drives with each 1.86 Tb.

The Raid 5 size is 930 Gb and OMSA says it is three drives of each 465 Gb. Do I understand correctly that in a Raid 5 configuration three drives are needed but the size is only made up of two drives? If not, where is the other 465 Gb gone?

Thanks,

Magnus

Unusual RAID Controller: HP SmartArray p400 in a PowerEdge r410

Hi,

We cobbled together a backup lab machine to store non-critical data on for redundancy. We are looking to spend as little on this project as possible, and therefore used an old HP SmartArray p400 to replace the aging PERC 6i/r in the server.
The server itself is a PowerEdge r410 w/ 16GB of memory, 2x Xeon X5570's and 4x WD Red 3TB that we are looking to put into a RAID 5.

The RAID controller initializes fine and the server recognizes it properly, but there seems to be no way to enter the controller's configuration menu during boot time. It displays initialization output and throws the expected "no logical drives detected" message, but no prompt or key combination is given for configuration menu entry. The default values pulled from the p400's doc pages (F8 and F1) also do not work.

I am running the system with nearly every BIOS/UEFI setting set to default, and I cannot find a way to access the controller. Any help is greatly appreciated, though I recognize that this is a very non-conventional problem.

Thanks,

-Paul

can't get 1800 to see the PERC

I had  working 1800 but now the system won't see the PERC4. I can't configure the new drives and create the RAID. I bought another PERC4 but it won't work either. I am getting errors on boot from the BIOS saying the is a memory limit but I never touched that at any time. I can get the DVD player to boot on the Windows disc but when it loads it doesn't see the drives. Any ideas? I think the BIOS is the problem but I wasn't sure. I thought about updating it.

PowerEdge 2950 Perc 5/i Slow speed

Hello all,

I'm currently running ESXi 5.5 on my PE 2950. I have a vm setup running a NAS. The shared drives on the NAS are two 2TB WD RE4 SATA hard drives in RAID 0. This server has SATA instead of SAS. I've noticed when dropping a file onto a shared drive the speeds peek at 11 MB/s. I would expect some more performance than that, is there something I need to setup to optimize transfer speeds?

PERC 6/i - Best stripe size for this environment?

Our current environment consists of a single PowerEdge 2900 III with a PERC 6/i running a RAID 10 array with a stripe size of 64K (default) made up of 4x 2TB Near-Line SAS drives (Read Ahead, Write Back, Disk Cache Enabled). The host OS is XenServer 6.2 and it runs multiple OS as follows:

Windows SBS 2008 x64 - Exchange & multiple SQL Express instances
Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 - single SQL Express instance
CentOS 6.6 x64 (x2) - cPanel & video transcoding and streaming
CentOS 6.3 x86 - Trixbox (VoIP)
PHD Virtual Backup 6.5.3 (running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS)

Here's a snippet from this article about stripe size:

"512K was selected as it is commonly used in Linux® and was determined to have the best combination of benefits for large I/O and the least detriment for small I/O on this controller across multiple operating systems."

We are due to perform a DR test in a fortnight and by doing so we'll be swapping out the current disks, building a brand new RAID 10 array and restoring from backups. This would be the perfect opportunity to do any modifications to the stripe size.

Since we're using 64K, if we changed the stripe size to 512K would we see any positive gains and would it impact the server in a negative way of any kind?

Should any other settings be different for this array and the environment, e.g. Read Policy?

PowerEdge 2900 III PERC 6/i SSD Raid

hi

I want to upgrade a PowerEdge 2900 III Server to windows 2012 r2 and use this opportunity to upgrade the two OS Raid 1 HDDs to a two Disk SSD Raid 1.

I know that the PERC 6/i supports SSDs in a single drive, but what's about a Raid and can the Trim-commands be used there? If not, is Trim not so important and I can still use SSDs for a Raid 1 or is it better to use normal SAS/SATA HDDs  instead?

C2100 Raid

Hello, I'm trying to use a Dell C2100 as a home storage server I plan to buy 12 2TB drives for it. I'm just wondering if it is possible to use raid 6 with this server? The C2100 i picked up from eBay comes with a PERC6i raid controller. Sorry I'm new to all this any input would be great.

Thank you!

How are mirrored drives utilized PE T610 Perc controller

$

I have a question about exactly how the mirrored drives in a PowerEdge T610 are utilized. They are mirrored and are the only ones currently in the system  - although I am about to add another mirrored pair for a data only volume. We have OpenSUSE 13.1 and two 1Tb Dell 7200k 3.5" SAS drives installed. The OS keeps notifying us that there are Kernel errors on a drive (SDA6). I had this problem once before and got in touch with Dell tech support and long story short they gave me a bootable disk and I brought it up and updated lots of things. Then I went ahead and did what it told to, which is run FSCK. It repaired the problem and no more messages for weeks. Now we are having it again. The drive(s) doesn't show any error light (amber)...it is green and still functioning. So my plan was to replace one that may have a bad sector or something.

Now to my question. When booting, does the PERC system boot off of both drives or only one? I know in the Dell SAS setup it shows these two drives, one a primary(disk 0) and one as the mirror copy (disk 1). Trying to determine if I need to replace only one of the hard drives or both. To the OS I know it looks like only one drive so I understand how it could not determine which one the error occurs on. In my thinking I should replace the primary and let it mirror up.

In that vein, can I simply put a new drive in and have it mirror auto-magically, or do I need to "do something" to make it happen. And does it matter if it is the primary or the mirror?

Dell C2100 Expander Backplane Issue

Hello,

I'm trying to get the Dell c2100 backplane working with an LSI 9271-8i Raid Card. The backplane I have is part number 9NXC7. I have two MiniSAS cables connected between the backplane and the LSI Card. I have set the LSI/PERC jumper on the backplane to open as indicated in the user guide. The backplane powers up and the drive LEDs turn on for the connected drives.

My issue is that none of the drives show up in the LSI card configuration manager.

The system originally came with a Perc6I and a backplane that had 1 SAS connector on it. I was able to connect the LSI card to the original backplane using a MiniSAS to SAS cable and the drives showed up.

Is there a firmware update for the 9NXC7 backplane?

Dell T300 SAS drive indicating failure but Online diags says all good?

Hi All,

I've got a Dell T300 domain controller with 4x 146GB SAS drives, 2 in a RAID 1 array, 2 as standard drives. On Monday I came in and the LCD display was saying 'Error 1810 HDD 1 fault' so I did some research and reseating the drive hot cleared the LCD error. I've also done a check using online diagnostics 2.16.0 that says all drives are OK. Despite this, the drive in question's status light is flashing Green - Amber-Off. Reading forums this indicates a predicted failure.

Do I need to change the drive or is it OK to continue using? I've installed Open Manage Server Administrator but it's not picking up the storage controller (SAS 6/ir, storage was selected as an option when installing OMSA, OSMA asking for a reboot but I'm currently in core hours).

Any help gratefully received.

DELL R510 Memory Upgrade

Like many on the forum i am

1) Wanting to upgrade memory in an R510 for a client and

2) Have no idea of the lingo and want to make sure my recommendation is right

Existing Server has

DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 4G, 1333, 2RX8, 8, 240, REGULATORY, LOW VOLTAGE

Wanting to pull memory out of Slot 4 and insert

2x Dell 16 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 2Rx4 RDIMM 1600MHz LV (A6994465)

Would this proposed configuration work?

Where can I download raid drivers for Windows 2008 64(not R2) for the PERC H710 mini controller for a R520? An install pack does me no good as I am trying to get just the drivers for a recovery disk.

Please advise
